Trainers are like Plumbers in that...

You know the old saying, plumbers have the worst pipes, mechanics have the worst cars.  I’m wondering if it is true for trainers and their own professional development.

How much did you spend on yourself last year on your own continuing professional development.  If you were a lawyer, accountant or doctor, your professional association would demand that you demonstrate how you have kept your skills and knowledge current by undertaking some professional development.

As a professional trainer, how much time and/or money did you invest in your professional development last year, and what’s in the budget for this year?

If I looked at your CV from last year to this year, what would have changed?  What have you added that makes you a more valuable contractor/consultant or employee?

3 things you might like to think about when considering some professional development:

  1. What will take your skills to the next level?  If you have your Cert IV in Training & Assessment, what will get you beyond that?
  2. What tool or instrument could you integrate into your existing offering that will add depth to your program offerings?
  3. What conference could you go to where you will pick up some new ideas and forge new professional relationships?
