Trust the process, it works.

One of the things I have discovered in my own personal experience, and also in chatting with other trainers, is that when we trust a well-designed process, we end up getting great results.
Many of you would know that I am a fan of the 4-Mat model. It was originally developed for the school system by Bernice McCarthy, and is easily adapted for adult learning.
The process is very simple:
- Identify WHY a group would want to be there. What's in it for them (not shareholders, managers, the organisation or the community....but for THEM!). Use this information to create motivation around your subject.
- Tell them WHAT they need to know. What are the steps, the theory, give a demonstration. You are the expert. Give them your expertise.
- Give them a chance to see HOW it works. This is an activity or exercise that allows the participants to experience the theory. Leave them alone to play, experiment, and in some cases, screw it up.
- Debrief the activity and explore WHAT ELSE is needed, or circumstances in which the subject will or won't work (WHAT IF).
I have to say that every time I stray from this simple model, or try and second guess the outcomes, things don't go nearly as well.
