What is your mindset?

In her amazing book, Mindset, Dr. Carol Dweck writes about the fixed mindset and the growth mindset.

According to Dweck, those with a fixed mindset, believe basic qualities, like intelligence, talent or ability, are fixed traits. They tend to spend their time proving or documenting their intelligence or talent rather than continuing to develop it. They also believe that natural talent should be enough.  You shouldn’t need to make any effort.

They’re wrong.

Those with a growth mindset believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. They generally end up with a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment. Virtually all great and successful people have had these qualities.

The great trainers I have experienced have a growth mindset that they apply not only to themselves, but also to the participants in their workshops.

This is an essential and core part of the mindset of a successful trainer.   The good news is that it can be developed.  I strongly encourage anyone in training to read Dr. Dwecks book.

To be a great trainer, you first need to be a great learner.
